Another milestone for Gp Capt Hemingway

Malcolm

The man who is thought to be the last surviving member of 'the Few' has celebrated his 103rd birthday in a nursing home in Foxrock, County Dublin.

Group Captain John Hemingway flew with RAF Fighter Command in both the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain and commanded No 43 Squadron in Italy at the end of the war, retiring from the service in 1963. Born on 17 July 1919, he was one of about 10 Irish nationals to take part in the Battle of Britain, despite the fact that Ireland was officially neutral in the Second World War.

"Trustees, volunteers and staff at the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust will, I am sure, join me in sending Group Captain John Hemingway our very best wishes on reaching such an auspicious age," said Hon Secretary Patrick Tootal.
